trip to Spain

The Great Mosque of Cordoba, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, or commonly known as the Mesquita is placed right in the heart of Andalusia making it easy for many to praise this historical site. This temple was converted to a Church by the invading Visigoths in 572. A mosque needed three characteristics to be official when constructed. A patio for everyone to bathe or talk, a tower and a qibla which is a wall showing which way Mecca for the time of prayer. But in this case, the mosque was constructed incorrectly because back when it was built it was thought to have been facing Mecca but when they gained more knowledge they realized it was incorrectly calculated.

Today we visited the city of Seville. On our tour we first saw what they call "El Torre de Oro," which was something created by the Muslims in order to patrol the river of Guadalquivir. We next saw the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See or better known as Cathedral of Seville which was completed in the 16th century. Inside you can find the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Later that day went into the Alcazar de Seville. This palace was built for Christian king Peter of Castile and can still be used today by the royal family. In this palace you can find a room, amoung many, called "El patio de la Muñeca." Legend says if you find all the dolls hidden in this room you will be rewarded with luck.

Medina Azahara is a archeological site of a Moorish city built by Abd-ar-Rahman III, the first Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba, in around 936-940. By the Caliphs side was Jafar, which was his trusting right hand. Medina Azahara was the first city to include what is called double security to really hide and secure the city from all outsiders. This city was built in the mountains of Sierra Morena to look over the city of Cordoba and to show the true power and effect the Umayyads had. Legend has it that Azahara was a women that Abd-ar-Rahman was in love with. And all the poems that were made up about this legend talk about her beauty and how the Abd-ar-Rahman constructed this city to represent the beauty of this women. He made everything out of limestone so when everyone looked it would contrast the mountain behind representing her eyes because they were so dark and beautiful.

5/17 During this week of May, in which we arrived to Spain the Spaniards hold a festival called "El Festival de los Patios de Córdoba." In this festival many people of the community open their doors to the rest of the township and many passing tourist to share the beauty they hold within their homes and for the chance to be claimed the best looking patio around. In order to be considered runner up a patio must have four characteristics originating from the 19th century, a special flooring common to the houses in Spain, a fruit plant and/or tree, plant pots surrounding the patio on the walls and a well to complete it all. After seeing many patios we continued to wander around the town of Cordoba to see various things such as la calle del Pañuelo which is 75 cm from wall to wall making it the smallest street in Spain and at the end the smallest patio around which is 15m2.
